This is the first look at the 2013 Chevy Malibu, due for a full unveiling at the 2011 New York and Shanghai Auto Shows on April 19th. So far, we get nothing but a teaser of the rear of the car and some general suggestions as to its specs, though the video below gives a better idea of what to expect.
Those specs are very general indeed, however: expect GM’s global four-cylinders, plus six-speed transmissions. The one thing notable in the announcement is the lack of any mention of a V-6 option. The current Malibu is available with a 252-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 in 2LT and LTZ trims.
Also not mentioned in the preview release: hybrids, though with GM’s use of eAssist technology on similarly-sized Buicks, it’s likely the next-gen Malibu will offer some sort of electric-assisted variant.
Given the 2013 model-year designation, we don’t expect to see the new Malibu on sale until sometime next year, with the current model filling in the gap until then. Expect full details later this month.
Chevy will hold a live web reveal April 18th from Shanghai, starting at 8:30 p.m. EDT at its Facebook page and with live streaming links for iPads and iPhones as well.
Exterior
DETROIT — General Motors has released the first full exterior photo of its redesigned 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, ahead of the car’s public unveiling at next week’s Shanghai and New York auto shows. GM plans a full reveal of the eighth-generation Malibu in a global webcast Monday night.

GM previously has released several teaser images and videos of the 2013 Malibu, including some interior details.
The exterior shot, of a 2013 Malibu LTZ, shows a strong resemblance between the new car and the current Malibu, which was introduced at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show and went on sale in model year 2008.
The new Malibu will be unveiled live starting at 8:30 p.m. EDT on April 18 on Chevrolet’s Facebook page. The Web reveal will also be streamed live on iPad and iPhone mobile devices. GM said the 2013 Malibu also will be shown April 20 at the 2011 New York Auto Show.
Interior
Chevrolet released the next teaser for the new Chevrolet Malibu, due in 2013, on Facebook. This time they reveal some of the the dashboard to boast the car’s neat interior design and of course the infotainment system. So far so good then, we had a shot of the exterior showing Camaro-like rear lights, and this photo of the interior also looks promising. The ingredients are stacking up for something truly great. You know, unless the teaser shots are deceptive! Hopefully not.
Price
Estimated price: $ 22,000 – $ 28,000
